Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Review: The ultimate blend of Electric SUV practicality & Muscle Car thrills?

Watch Vicki Butler-Henderson give her verdict on the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT.

Mustang, not a word usually associated with anything other than petrol and powerful V8 engines. However, in this review, Vicki Butler-Henderson talks us through Ford’s latest generation of the much-loved Mustang model, the Mustang Mach-E GT.

With prices starting at around £43,000 rising well up to circa £70,000, the Mach-E can certainly be specified to suit a range of budgets. The specific model in this review is the GT series specification which starts at £67,000.

Design and Exterior

Starting with the front of the car, we are met with the striking presence of a large bonnet paired with the sleek design of Ford’s adaptive LED Mustang headlamps. As we move towards the rear of the Mach-E, we’re met with the familiar signature Mustang styled taillights. The model in the video is displayed in the eye catching “grabber blue” which is an optional extra priced at £960.

There are some nifty bits of tech associated with the exterior of the Mach-E namely the automated boot opening system which can be activated with the kick of your foot underneath the rear bumper – perfect if your hands are full and you can’t open the boot manually.

Another fantastic feature related to the exterior is Ford’s E-Latch System. Say you have organised to meet a friend at your car, and you are both coming from separate starting points you can give your friend the code to access the car if you are going to arrive later than they are!

Wheels & Tyre Talk

Across the Mach-E specification range, alloy wheels start at 19” rising to 20” which is what is on the GT version in the video featuring a distinctive lattice design and finished in an optional black colour that will bump the price up another £400.

Wrapped around these wheels are the Pirelli P Zero’s which are marked with ‘elect’ on the sidewall which denotes Pirelli tyres that are dedicated to electric vehicles.

Interior Design & Features

The interior of the Mach-E - especially the GT specification – feels luxurious as you are instantly greeted by the 8-Way Power Ford Performance Seats with Lumbar Support. This paired with ambient lighting and a mix of materials, suede panels, soft leather and elements which have a shine and catch your attention all contribute to the swanky feel of the cabin.

Ford have thought about the driver and passenger here as there is space to store two mobile phones, however, only one of the storage space has wireless charging. As well as this, there is plenty of storage space with even a hidden cubby hole directly under the arm rest which is embossed with the GT logo which is a great touch for the GT specification.

As we move into a new age of infotainment systems, Ford have gone all in by storing all the functions and tech within a 15.5” touchscreen which can receive all its updates over the air and is complete with wireless car play (both Apple and Android) and DAB radio.

The Mach-E is packed with driver assistance modes, but Vicki highlights three that caught her attention. One being the cross-traffic alert system which beeps to let you know if a car is coming from both directions while you are reversing out of a car parking space. Next, is the reversing camera which has a 360-degree view and finally the blue cruise technology which allows the driver to let go of the wheel when you are driving on certain parts of the UK’s motorways.

Further adding to the premium status of the Mach-E is a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a panoramic roof.

Performance Statistics

For the petrol heads of the world, rest assured that Ford still offer the iconic Mustang with a V8 petrol engine. However, this review is all about the electric version (the GT specification specifically), and although it is electric it still packs a punch.

With almost 490 BHP, the Mustang Mach-E creeps into Porsche 911 GT3 territory and can go from 0-60 mph in an astonishing 3.8 seconds which is staggering given that the car weighs a whopping 2,400kg!

Going fast is great, but being able to stop is just as important and this is more than doable with the Brembo brakes which come as standard on the GT specification.

Battery & Range

Range is the topic everyone speaks about when it comes to electric vehicles and Ford have ensured that the Mach-E is not at the forefront of ridicule with a range of just over 300 miles between charges.

The GT specification can achieve fast charge (from 10% battery to 80%) in just 45 minutes which isn’t spec topping, but you might not need it to be!

Vicki’s Verdict

“Mustangs have always had a touch of rebelliousness about them, and this one does too albeit in a quieter less playful fashion than the petrol powered ponies”.

Vicki ends her review of the Ford Mustang Mach-E reminiscing about the charm of the Mustang name and the rebellious nature attached to it, especially with the petrol-powered variants. Perhaps the preference is petrol over electric, but Vicki does mention how impressive the various driving modes are when they can be accessed (referring to the untamed plus mode). In terms of what you get across the different specifications of the Mach-E, Vicki does state she would steer you towards the cheaper end of the offering to get more “bangs for your bucks”.
